How to Improve Your Nintendo Switch Graphics While Docked

As more gamers get their hands on next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, the difference between the graphics those systems are capable of and the Nintendo Switch becomes obvious. The Nintendo Switch's graphics certainly aren’t the best, but there are ways to improve them if you find yourself particularly underwhelmed by them.

By changing just a few settings on your console, you can drastically improve the graphics of your Nintendo Switch while playing on a TV. These settings are easy to miss but will make a huge difference to your gaming experience while docked.

How Do I Make My Nintendo Switch Look Better on My TV?

When you pull your Switch out of the box, the TV Output settings will be the stock-standard ones. But if you have a brilliant TV just waiting to play something in full 4K resolution, you will definitely be doing yourself a disservice by leaving them as they are.

There are many settings you can tweak on your system, so you can better enjoy your Nintendo Switch, and these are just the beginning...

Change Your TV Resolution Settings

The first setting you are going to want to adjust is the TV Resolution settings. The TV Resolution settings dictate what resolution your gameplay will display at. There are several options to choose from, ranging from 480p to 1080p. If you have a 4K TV or one that is capable of 1080p, changing this setting could drastically improve your gameplay.

If you’ve never changed your TV Resolution on your Switch before, it will be set to Automatic. Changing it to 1080p ensures you will get the best resolution possible when you’re playing with your Switch while it's docked.

Change Your RGB Range Settings

Changing the RGB Range setting can make an even bigger difference than changing the TV Resolution. Colors have a tendency to appear a little washed out or dull when displayed on your TV screen, but changing the RGB Range setting can make sure that doesn’t happen.

Like the TV Resolution setting, RGB Range has a couple of different options. If you’ve never tinkered with this setting before, it will be set to Automatic. To get the most out of your gameplay while docked, make sure you change this setting to Full range. Make sure you avoid setting it to Low range, especially if you’re trying to improve your graphics.

Changing your RGB Range setting to Full range ensures your Switch is displaying the full range of colors on the spectrum as brightly and vividly as possible.

How to Change the TV Resolution and RGB Range Settings on Your Nintendo Switch

Both of these options can be found in the same place in the settings for your Nintendo Switch, so you can optimize graphics in one fell swoop. To optimize RGB Range and TV Resolution, open the settings on your Nintendo Switch by pressing the gear icon on the home menu.

Scroll down to the very bottom of the settings menu and select TV Output. Select TV Resolution and set it to whatever your TV is capable of. You can choose from Automatic, 480p, 720p, and 1080p. 1080p is ideal, but what you will choose depends on what TV you have.

Once you’ve set the TV Resolution to the right setting, scroll down and select RGB Range. Here you can choose from Automatic, Full range, and Limited range. Make sure you select Full range for the best results.

If you scroll down and explore some more of the TV Output settings on your Switch, you can also make your Switch turn on your TV, which is an incredibly handy feature to have.

Change Your Gameplay for the Better by Tweaking These Switch Settings

These settings will take all of a few seconds to change and could quite possibly leave you wondering how you ever got by without them.

It is true that the Nintendo Switch is not getting any younger, and the newest next-gen consoles are leaving it in the dust, especially in terms of graphics. But while there aren’t enough settings in the world that could get the Nintendo Switch to reach the kind of performance we see from the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, these settings will at least improve things a little.
