England vs Australia referee Stephanie Frappart's family are a 'little afraid' of abuse

Referee Stephanie Frappart admitted that her family are often “a little bit afraid” of the abuse she receives from players and supporters.

The French official will make history when she oversees England’s international friendly against Australia. Frappart will become the first female referee to take charge of a Three Lions men’s match at Wembley.

It is the latest of a long litany of achievements the trailblazing referee has achieved over the course of her football career. But despite her experience and authority, Frappart admits her family still worry when she is refereeing.

“For sure, they are a little bit afraid,” Frappart said in an interview with the Athletic before the World Cup. “They don’t say anything, because they don’t want to get me into trouble, or make me concentrate on the game less.”

Frappart has taken charge of some of the biggest matches in world football. She became the first female referee to take charge of the men’s UEFA Super Cup final when she oversaw Liverpool’s penalty-shootout victory over Chelsea in 2019.

She is also the first women’s official to referee a match in the World Cup, the Champions League group-stages and Ligue 1. At Wembley, Frappart will be joined by assistants Mikael Berchebru and Aurélien Drouet and fourth official Hakim Ben El Hadj, while Mathieu Vernice and Nicolas Rainville will look after VAR.

There is every chance England’s clash against Australia could get a bit tetchy, as the two nations share a rich, sporting rivalry. However, Frappart will not be phased by any of the team’s antics.

“When you’re refereeing, you’re happy,” she added. “You know the importance of the game, but you know your own quality and skill.

“If they appoint you at this level, it’s because you have the quality for that. You’re there because you deserve it.”
